How it can help you
Counselling and psychotherapy are talking therapies that can help people with emotional problems and mental health issues. Some of the challenges people bring to therapy include stress, anxiety, bereavement and relationship problems.
In psychotherapy and counselling you will have a safe and non-judgemental space to express your feelings and explore the issues you are facing, helping you to gain greater insight into them.
Sessions are confidential, allowing you to discuss things that you might not feel able to discuss with other people. Being able to discuss these things can be an incredible relief. Counselling will often provide a space focusing more on helping the client talk through situations. Psychotherapy frequently involves a more 'intervention' based approach, where the therapist helps you find better ways to cope, or works with you to enable you to discover new ways to think and behave in order to try to improve your emotional and mental well-being.
How may sessions will I need?
Psychotherapy varies in the number of the sessions you need. It largely depends upon a combination of the complexity of the issues you want to resolve, the type of therapy and the therapist. Most issues will need a minimum of 6 sessions, however for many issues and the type of therapy involved, more than two years may be involved. I find many clients like an open ended approach, and we will work collaboratively to help plan the right approach together.
